Symphony of Santoor

Artscape Opera House

Features the accomplished santoor player Rahul Sharma live in concert with Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. This is a world premiere event and features a confluence of the rich musical traditions of India with western classical music. The concert features a range of Indian classical ragas, folk, and light classical music compositions rearranged for orchestra, with the 100-stringed santoor as the main solo instrument. With over 60 released albums, Rahul Sharma has experimented with his music and taken the santoor into various genres from classical to folk to new age and world fusion. His album Namaste India with Kenny G is still one of the bestselling fusion albums from India. Rahul will be accompanied by Ojas Adhiya (tabla) and Avinash Chandrachud (piano) and the 46-piece Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra.

Don’t Miss Your Turning Point

First Community Resource Centre Arts and Culture present: Don’t Miss Your Turning Point at Artscape Theatre Centre. A story about two brothers, who share an amazing bond, growing up on the Cape Flats, dealing with social ills and not having much hope.  One of the brothers, Quinton, makes a positive change that surprises the community, leaving him hoping that his family will join him in this new chapter. On his journey of change, a tragedy strikes; his brother gets shot and killed, he retaliates and shoots his brother’s murderers. Quinton ends up in prison but gets another opportunity to change his life, because where there is life there is hope.

Impoverished but inspired, Puccini’s young Bohemians make art, quarrel, make up, break up, and make believe that there will always be another tomorrow – never imagining that their frail friend Mimi will not live to see the final days of summer. Matthew Wild’s innovative production, which premiered to widespread critical claim in Switzerland in 2018, comes to Cape Town in early 2020. Told as flashbacks of the elderly painter Marcello, the production movingly contrasts the impetuousness of youth with the regrets of old age. Presented by Cape Town Opera.
