  • MOTHER CITY COMEDY FESTIVAL

    Baxter Theatre Centre Main Rd, Rondebosch, Cape Town

    This is a celebration of stand-up comedy and will showcase a wide spectrum of different comedy styles with more than 45 comedians performing in over 40 shows during the three weeks. With two shows daily and three on weekends, The Mother City Comedy Festival promises to get audiences up close and personal with their favourite comedians while also introducing some of the country’s funniest upcoming talents. Comedy-lovers will be spoilt for choice during this festival of funnies!

  • GEGELAGEGE – BE MY DATE

    Baxter Theatre Centre Main Rd, Rondebosch, Cape Town

    A standup comedy all about love and romance. It encourages couples to spend more time together and appreciate each other by going out on dates, buying each other gifts and going on holiday. The story is told by a character named Solly, who has just attended a couple’s event, at work, without a date. This makes him reflect on his past experiences and near misses with love. This reflection is both funny and entertaining. He reaches the conclusion that people in relationships are blessed to have each other. He is inspired to find his true love. This is a story about love, love and love. This play is written and performed by Makhubalo Ikaneng. It is directed by Lungile Ikaneng.

  • The Outlaw Muckridge

    Baxter Theatre Centre Main Rd, Rondebosch, Cape Town

    Renowned radio broadcaster and actor John Maytham, teams up with director Alan Committie and writer Louis Viljoen, in the world premiere of The Outlaw Muckridge, at the Baxter Golden Arrow Studio, for two weeks only, from 13 to 24 October 2020, at 7pm.   This lethal trio of creatives combine their collective experience and expertise to present the first live stage performance at The Baxter since lockdown was first implemented, some six months ago. The story deals with a lonely, damaged man who has been taking care of his ailing mother for most of his life. In between bouts of depression and flashbacks to a life filled with emotional abuse and failures, he wishes himself to be a vengeful cowboy out to right the wrongs of the world.   • Così Fan Tutte

    Cape Town Opera present brings  Italian Così Fan Tutte at the Baxter Theatre from 28 - 31 October.   Two young men put their fiancées to the test by playing an elaborate prank to prove their faithfulness. Bearing the subtitle, ‘The school for lovers’, Mozart’s Così fan tutte is a powerful tale of love, temptation and fidelity.  In a combination of glorious music and bittersweet comedy,  improbable disguises and partner-swapping are put side-by-side with a more serious, even cynical, commentary on the inevitability of human frailty.   • Baxter Back on Stage with Gregory Maqoma and Zolani Mahola

    Renowned artists Gregory Maqoma and Zolani Mahola share The Baxter stage, for the first time, in a unique benefit season, from 3 to 7 November.   Two of South Africa’s internationally revered artists - Gregory Maqoma (choreographer, dancer, teacher and director) and Zolani Mahola (popular singer/songwriter/storyteller), will share the Theatre stage in an exclusive limited season, Baxter Back on Stage with Gregory Maqoma and Zolani Mahola.    Baxter Back on Stage with Gregory Maqoma and Zolani Mahola runs at the Baxter Theatre for five performances only, from 4 to 7 November at 7pm to the public and a special gala performance on 3 November, for invited guests only.   Tickets for the fundraiser season are R220 and includes light snacks and beverages.     The production looks at how the South African justice system fails the women who suffer emotional, physical, or sexual abuse at the hands of their spouses. Femicide and gender-based violence against women and children, often perpetrated by their partners or spouses, have reached pandemic proportions in South, making the timing of this production perfect, critical and vital.

  • Living Coloured

    Baxter Theatre Centre Main Rd, Rondebosch, Cape Town

    Yusuf Daniels’ bestselling book, Living Coloured, set to be a highlight this festive season, has been adapted for the stage, directed by the award-winning Loukmaan Adams, at the Baxter Concert Hall, from 8 December to 9 January at 7.30pm with Saturday matinees at 2.30pm.   This stage version is based on Daniels’ hugely successful compilation of short stories, Living Coloured (Because Black and White Were Already Taken) and brings together a dynamic group of creatives led by Adams as director, with adaptation by Daniel Mpilo Richards, set design by Patrick Curtis and costumes by Marisa Steenkamp. It also marks Adams’ debut as a solo director.   Living Coloured is an ode to an era where communities and families thrived despite the hardship of apartheid. It is a hilarious, heart-warming and uplifting portrayal of Daniels’ own life story which speaks of family, friendships, community, traditions and culture, and what it was like growing up on the Cape Flats during an oppressive time in South Africa with racism, gangsterism and poverty. The characters are instantly recognisable and relatable as it tells the story of a young boy faced with these challenges and how he turned them into positives, making the most of living through these trying times and under these conditions.   Living Coloured runs at The Baxter Concert Hall from 8 December 2020 to 9 January 2021.
