Coming back in Cape Town in June 2019 for a second year.

Born from a citizens’ initiative, the Refugee Food Festival is an annual project allowing restaurant owners to open their kitchens to refugee chefs. The first Refugee Food Festival, founded by the Food Sweet Food charity with the support of the UN Agency for Refugees, took place in Paris in June 2016.

Last February, the festival won the ‘Event Of The Year’ title at The World Restaurant Awards.

Around June 20th (World Refugee Day) some of our favourite restaurants in Cape Town will welcome and collaborate with talented refugee cooks.

The Refugee Food Festival invites refugee chefs to cook at local restaurants. Different day, different restaurant, different chef! The RFF is a citizen-led project aimed at raising awareness around challenges faced by refugees and celebrating cultural diversity through food. Over the last few years, the RFF has taken place in 15 European cities. This June, the festival will take place in 16 cities around the world.

An exciting program of events, with restaurants, markets and companies opening up their kitchens and collaborating with a guest chef to cook up a delicious menu, showcasing their story, passions and home.

Last year Capetonians were able to experience Ethiopian, Vegetarian East African, Angolan, Congolese, Palestinian & Jordanian, Bengali and Somalian dishes and flavours.

Lunch, dinner, and cooking class bookings are to be made by contacting restaurants directly. Be sure to make your reservations in advance as spots are limited and will fill up quickly!
