    With her latest work Hullo, Bu-Bye, Koko, Come In, the poet reacts to success and reflects on her position as a Black artist in White institutions, asking: ‘Why are you always hijacking our narratives with your gaze?’ With their powerful language, her texts examine the precarious proximity of hyper-visibility and disappearance, being swallowed up when one’s voice is hijacked and bought: ‘Europe asks if it can touch my hair / backspace / Europe touches my hair’. Weaving together sound, visual design and projection mapping, Putuma creates a multimedia performance of her new poems for the stage, radically questioning the points of view between audience and performers.     Local comedians, Thato Mabelane and Arlene Petersen have joined forces to bring their inaugural gut-busting comedy special, ‘Survival of the Funniest’, to Cape Town’s iconic Baxter Theatre Concert Hall this March for one evening of laughter medicine.   • ICA’s flagship Live Art Festival

    The ICA’s flagship Live Art Festival (LAF) is a biennial interdisciplinary festival, which began in 2012. It is designed to challenge and extend the public’s experience of live art in a non-commercial environment and make accessible the work of visual and performing artists who explore new forms, break boundaries, flout aesthetic conventions, tackle controversy, confront audiences and experiment with perceptions. This year the festival will be held from 19 March to 3 April 2022 in various venues in Cape Town.   Running themes for the festival include sentient being, the earth still shakes, public intimacies and Performative Utopias. sentient being speaks to the idea of consciousness in all that lives, a way of approaching a perennial ICA theme, the age of the Anthropocene, comprising a collection of works that will be performed in collaboration with the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden; the earth still shakes comprises a series of works that address the continued if not worsening precarity of people in the wake of a lack of transformation; public intimacies considers what intimacy means in the wake of a pandemic and other intensities, embodying the paradox of the pressure on and the necessity for intimacy; and Performative Utopias, a tribute to the late curator Dominique Malaquais, embraces the possibilities and impossibilities of utopian futures Tickets are free but limited.   • Jazzart Dance Theatre Graduate Performance: Meraki

    Cape Town, 28 February 2022 – Taking place at the Artscape theatre in Cape Town, 24 – 26 March 2022, Jazzart Dance Theatre’s fulltime dancers will perform their graduate work entitled ‘Meraki’.  The eagerly awaited production will highlight three key works the dancers have co-created since enrolment in 2019.  ‘Meraki’ celebrates the dancers’ hard work and commitment and showcases their exceptional talent, which has been honed and cultivated by three acclaimed South African dance makers. ‘Meraki’ is directed by Dane Hurst and Shaun Oelf, Jazzart’s Artist in Residence and features his latest work ‘Awake’.  The programme opens with ‘Frontline’, choregraphed by Hurst in 2021 and is followed by Jazzart’s former Artistic Director, Sifiso Kweyama’s work, ‘Solid’, which premiered at the Artscape in 2019. ‘Frontline’ was created during a time of global pandemic and protest, a monumental time of change whose echoes still reverberate today. During 2020, Hurst worked remotely with Jazzart’s dancers and choreographed the work with the assistance of Oelf.  It should have debuted in 2020 but only hit the theatre stage in 2021.  As can be expected, the work examines the people, including our youth, caught up in the chaos, whilst putting themselves on the line and often finding themselves in harm’s way at the frontline. Kweyama’s ‘Solid’, skilfully, and sensitively interlaces the individual stories into one fluid and cohesive dance that progresses through life’s intricate journey, materialising as a peaceful, joyful, and united human element, protective and nurturing of one another, and of the environment we call home. The production ends with Shaun Oelf’s ‘Awake’. This new choreographic, audio-visual dance work explores the notion of being AWAKE.
