SoloAfrica Monodrama Festival
September 4, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - September 9, 2017 @ 10:00 pmR425 – R540
5 one-person plays of any genre, dance, drama, comedy and physical theatre, under one label. Monodrama. One performance by one person in under one hour! 2 performances per day over 5 days.
Three international productions will join this inaugural event. These are two plays by world renowned actor Pip Utton – Maggie and Hitler– with both shows having toured the world and continuing to do so.
The other international offering, a production called Rumination, directed by Emre Erdem, comes from Turkey and is a danced interpretation of the works of the poet Rumi.
The 4 local plays currently in development specifically for this new festival are performed by:
- Renowned comedienne Shimmy Isaacs – an account of a young soldier being taken off to the bush war in Angola in the seventies.
- A piece by Dominic Paulsen, exploring the mindset of a man bent on suicide through his obesity guilt.
- A piece by Motladtji Didodi about a young black woman choosing her partner outside the traditional guidelines of the more conservative African cultural practice of partner choice subscriptions.
- And a dance-driven piece by Khumbulani Mzayiya, detailing the challenges of gender identity in a very conservative society.
These are all new South African pieces in development, still without titles, with the intention of exporting them into the international theatre community after the festival.
