Current exhibitions at 99 Loop
September 7, 2017 - October 21, 2017
The Art of Making it | Jonathan van der Walt | 07 – 23 September
99 Loop is delighted to be exhibiting the latest body of work by Port
Elizabeth-based sculptor Jonathan van der Walt, who is a 2017 finalist in
the Sasol New Signatures Art Competition.
The main focus of this collection of resin & bronze figures is craftsmanship
in contemporary art production. Many of the most renowned international
contemporary artists are more art directors than craftsmen, often physically
uninvolved in the production of their own work. Van der Walt focuses on Jeff
Koons, Damien Hirst, Maurizio Cattelan and Takashi Murakami. He at what
distinguishes the artist from the craftsman, and the neglected tactile
qualities of being a ‘maker’.
Test Campaign | Wim Legrand | 07 – 23 September
Perhaps better known for his work in running the limited edition,
multi-artist 50ty50ty print collection, which Belgian-born Legrand developed
with his wife Jeanne Hoffman, Legrand is also a talented surrealist in his
own right, with a penchant for narrative. This brand new collection of
paintings and drawings follows on from previous work, offering playful take
on the paradoxical strangeness of everyday reality.
Codex | Isabella Kuijers | 27 September – 21 October 2017
Inspired by the symbolism of the age-old tradition of transcribing tactile
knowledge to paper, Kuijers presents ‘Codex’, her second solo exhibition at
the gallery. The word codex returns to the Latin for ‘tree trunk’, caudex,
gently entwining us with Kuijers’ fascination with floral history and the
progressive accumulation of knowledge. The works featured in the exhibition
serve as chapters in a larger narrative, beaming light onto the pitfalls of
communication in the age of Information Technology, and our perilous
relationship with that most precious emblem of the Gutenberg mind: paper.
