TABLE MOUNTAIN IS SET UP TO WELCOME YOU SAFELY

TABLE MOUNTAIN IS SET UP TO WELCOME YOU SAFELY

While celebrating the festive season might look a little different this year, there are still plenty of places for you to explore in South Africa. From parks to seaside towns and the unique cultural beat of our cities, celebrating everything local is the way to go.

For those heading down to the Cape coast, make sure that you add a visit to the top of Table Mountain to your bucket list. Rated as the leading tourist attraction in Africa, this iconic landmark boasts the best views of the city’s skyline.

With its rich biodiversity, nature enthusiasts and bird lovers (known as twitchers) can experience more than 23 000 different species of plants and over 900 types of birds alone in the Table Mountain area. For those with a spirit of adventure, visitors are able to abseil off its cliffs or hike up one of its many picturesque trails.

“With the summer days and a greater focus on staying healthy, now is the perfect time for people to explore the outdoors. Not only does this have numerous health benefits, but it’s also a great way to spend time with family and friends, all while being able to maintain social distancing,” says Wahida Parker, Managing Director at the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC).

Famed for carrying visitors in a 360-degree rotating steel-and-glass bubble, the Table Mountain Cableway is the greatest way to get to the top of South Africa’s New7Wonder of Nature. One of the best ways to enjoy the breath-taking views with family and friends is with a glass of wine in hand and a slice of the famous milk tart on offer at the top station of the cableway.

This year TMACC is going cashless, with tickets only available for purchase online via Webtickets. Visitors can connect to the free Wi-Fi available at the lower station to buy their tickets on arrival to purchase tickets. But it is recommended to plan ahead by booking in advance.

Top tips for your visit to the Table Mountain:

  • With unpredictable weather and high winds during December, visitors are encouraged to visit the TMACC website ahead of their visit to determine whether the cableway will be open on the day
  • The cableway will operate between 08:00 and 21:00 from Monday to Sunday from 16 December 2020 until 31 January 2021.
  • There is high demand for parking during peak season, so visitors are encouraged to use public transport, or the hop-on hop-off city sightseeing bus where possible.
  • Visitors wanting to learn more about Table Mountain can download free audio tours using their mobile. To download the app, visit https://bit.ly/3mDvsTR
  • Pack a small bag with essential items such as water to stay hydrated in the summer heat and sunscreen and a hat, as well as a jacket in case the weather turns.
  • For those wishing to enjoy one of the many hiking trails on offer, weather-related hazards such as the heat and wind can catch visitors off guard if they are unprepared, and uneven pathways and hiking trails could lead to people stumbling and falling. Not to mention that five of the most dangerous species of snakes are found in the vicinity.
  • Take extra care when exploring the mountain by planning your route, sticking to the designated paths and always walking with an experienced hiking guide.
  • To help protect visitors to the mountain, high-tech CCTV cameras are fixed at strategic locations across the park and on the trails to help cast a wider security net over Table Mountain. These are monitored by operators around the clock, while SANParks personnel will be deployed to respond to any incidents as required. Visitors are always encouraged to be vigilant and guard against any criminal behaviour.

TMACC is taking all health and safety protocols seriously, which includes adhering to social distancing and all Covid-19 regulations. This will mean that a maximum of 40 people, including the cabin master, will be allowed in the cable car.
