A Taste Of India

A Taste Of India

A scenic drive along the M4, past Cape Town’s iconic St James Beach, lies the Dido Valley.

On the cusp of Glen Cairn and Simonstown, the newly developed Harbour Bay Mall houses The Raj Indian Restaurant, the newest addition to the well-known South African chain that has grown significantly over the past two decades. The restaurant boasts a magnificent uninterrupted ocean view by day and a beautiful silhouette of the Simonstown coastline by night.

Inspired by traditional North Indian cuisine, the menu offers a selection of well-known meat, seafood and vegetarian dishes, all masterfully prepared by born and bred Indian chefs. Firm favourites are showcased on the menu, including a variety of Rogan josh, Vindaloo, Butter chicken, Korma & Tandoori dishes.

While homage is paid to Indian traditions throughout, a touch of South African influence shines through with venison being an added menu category for those with more adventurous tastes.

Sides include traditional flat breads, naan and roti, a variety of plain or pilau rice and raita (a tasty yoghurt-based condiment).

Dishes can be tailored to suit everyone’s “heat” preference, from mild to hot, making it a family-friendly establishment that caters to all palates. Extra hot can be arranged upon request for those who really enjoy firing it up.

To round off a meal and for those with a sweet tooth, a small range of popular Indian desserts are available. If you’ve ever wanted to try kulfi, handmade Indian ice cream, this is your chance, or perhaps, mildly spiced kheer, a warm and creamy, spiced rice dessert, which is perfect for keeping the winter chills at bay. A fully stocked bar also is also available.

In addition to the traditional set menu, The Raj also has a selection of promotional offers for families – The Raj Family meal includes 3 curries, naans, starters and rice, a range of lunch options – The Raj Thali & Tandoori Chicken with chips and a Wednesday Navy Night special, exclusive to the Simonstown branch.

Those looking to host catered events can make group reservations, or hire the venue for private functions, with a tailored menu to suit guests’ requirements.

The Raj has joined hands with the Simonstown Business Association to help attract more locals and tourists to this wonderful location. Simonstown is most popular for Water sport, Penguins at Boulders, SA Navy Museum, Toy Soldier Museum and The Historical Ghost Walk. What better than to end day your day with a delicious curry at The Raj.

Some popular guesthouses to visit Mariner Guesthouse, Residence William French, Tintswalo at Boulders and A Boat House. You may pick up a Raj voucher at one of these if you’re lucky!
