“ITALIAN OPERA EMBRACES AFRICA”
SKETCHES AND COSTUMES FROM THE RICH COLLECTION OF TEATRO DELL’OPERA DI ROMA
This exhibition is a tribute to Opera, a journey through the masterpieces and the most famous characters of the lyrical repertoire performed at the Teatro dell’Opera in the last century. The selection includes 49 sketches and 14 costumes, each piece related to a famous opera title, selected essays designed by theatrical artists ranging from 1912 to the present day, part of the golden age of opera. Two costumes worn by Maria Callas and Luciano Pavarotti complete the gallery. As a special tribute to South Africa there will be a video of one of the latest production of Lulu by Alban Berg directed by the great and famous South African artist William Kentridge.

A retelling of the Romeo and Juliet story, this opera is Bellini’s poignant take on the tragedy and tenderness of young love and the rivalry between their families, the Capulets and the Montagues. This bel canto masterpiece I Capuleti e i Montecchi will be brought to stage in a collaboration between Cape Town Opera and UCT Opera School on 15, 17 and 18 May at Artscape Opera House. Steven Stead directs and Jeremy Silver, Director of the UCT Opera School, conducts the UCT Symphony Orchestra, with designs by Michael Mitchell and Kobus Rossouw. The soloists – members of the much-admired Cape Town Opera Young Artists Programme, and UCT Opera School students – will perform along with a 30-member chorus.
