With just a few years since its inception, the Franschhoek Wine Tram successfully established itself as a ‘must do’ experience when visiting the culinary capital of South Africa. A great vision, professional executing and management and a superb standard of service drives the team behind the Wine Tram to keep offering alluring ways and combinations to create the best day out.
With currently offering 6 different routes that holds treasures for both foodies and wine lovers, we will lay out for you 2 routes at a time. All routes are based on a hop-on hop-off system that follows a time table and are complimented with specially designed, old charming open buses to get you from the tracks to the cellar door.
The Red Line departs on the tram-bus first and showcases Franschhoek’s picturesque vineyards while stopping at the following wine estates: Maison, Eikehof, Leopard’s Leap, Chamonix, Dieu Donne, Franschhoek Cellar, Rickety Bridge and Grande Provence.
Maison Estate is home to the award winning and much loved by locals, Chefs Warehouse. The estate’s wines follows the classic French style maturing in small French oak barrels.
Eikehof Estate is a 4th generation family vineyard that shares their knowledge and love around cheese platters in the tasting room
Leopard’s Leap welcomes you to try their wines with vast offerings in the Rotisserie Restaurant. The Rotisol spit is complimented with the Harvest Table and features seasonal salads, roasted vegetables from the biologic vegetable and herb garden on the farm, farm-baked breads, pastries and cakes.
The South African table is a tutored experience at the kitchen table with the head chef. It presents guests with the opportunity to taste authentic South African dishes and to learn about the food heritage while sharing a meal. If you have the time, the Cooking Demonstration followed by dinner will ensure you a treasured memories for years to come.
Chamonix Wine Estate combines wine tasting with a 2 hour game drive in their wildlife reserve. Racine, the estate’s restaurant is the culinary birth place of one of South Africa’s known chefs, Reuben Riffle. While relocating and rebuilding his own establishment in the village, he came back to create simple sophisticated bistro style cuisine of international standards. Some of the exquisite gastronomy is available on-the-go at the deli. The estate also offers a series of lodges and cottages.
Dieu Donne’s scenic location overlooks the Franschhoek valley from its visitor’s facility. Roca restaurant serves Mediterranean flavours and is a perfect location to enjoy one of the most magnificent vistas in the Cape Winelands.
The Franschhoek Cellar is a favourite wine tasting and pairing venue. In addition to their own wines they stock and serve partner wines like Brampton and Bellingham. The Platform Bar & Bistro is located on the old railway platform and was re-modelled to mimic a train carriage that overlooks the mountains and vineyards.
Rickety Bridge wine experiences include tastings, Wine Blendings and Cellar Tours that can be arranged by appointment. The estate restaurant, Paulina’s, open for lunch 7 days a week, features a variety of half and full portions of bistro-style menu that allows diners the opportunity to sample and share dishes.
Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate is a local landmark. The tastings, tours and wine blending experiences are complimented by an art gallery and the estate’s shop that stocks fine African artefacts, photography and smaller collectables. The restaurant is open 7 days a week, for lunch and dinner. The estate’s picnic grounds and basket contents are tasty and picture perfect.
The Yellow Line departs on the tram first and showcases Franschhoek’s picturesque vineyards and stops at the following wine estates: Rickety Bridge, Grande Provence, Maison, Eikehof, Leopard’s Leap, Chamonix, Dieu Donne and Franschhoek Cellar.
