The Cape Town City Ballet will perform at the Artscape over the Festive Season, presenting two prudaction: the old time favorite The Nutcracker and a celebretory new ballet, The Cabaret Club.

The traditional fairytale version of The Nutcracker tells the story of Clara at her family’s Christmas Eve party. Her mysterious uncle, Drosselmeyer, gives her a Nutcracker doll, starting a night of mysteries and magic as the Nutcracker Prince comes to life to defeat the evil Rat King and his army. Clara travels through a magical snowstorm to celebrate their victory on an enchanted island, where she is transformed into the Sugar Plum Fairy.

This version of the ballet is that of Russian choreographer, Viktor Vynonen. It was first seen in Cape Town in 2000, when Viktor Barykin came to Cape Town to teach it. The pas de deux for the Snow Queen and Prince, choreographed by David Poole in 1972, has been added to the Snow Scene, while Madam Bon Bon makes a welcome return to the last act.
