OUDE LIBERTAS SUMMER CONCERTS- DEC 2018

The warm nights in the winelands are now filled with the aromas of the blooming vines. A special time in the year and a perfect opportunity to enjoy the intimate amphitheater at the historical Oude Libertas Wine Estate just outside Stellenbosch.

YoungSTARS & Hugo Lambrecht’s Symphony Orchestra

1 Dec, 20:15- 22:00

These youngsters are of school going age and have all participated in some or other classical competition.

The Hugo Lambrecht Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Liam Burden, will once again grace the stage with soloists from their highly successful Concerto Festival. Young soloists from in and around Cape Town will performselected concerti, featuring works by Telemann, Haydn, Mozart, Chopin and Stephenson. Orchestral masterpieces will include works by von Suppé, Schubert and selections from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite to usher in the festive season.

Libertas Choir- we are the voice

8 Dec, 20:15- 22:00

The Libertas Choir conducted by Johan de Villiers will perform a programme consisting of a wide spectrum of choral music. The first part of the concert will be devoted to a cappella renderings of compositions by iconic contemporary composers like Karl Jenkins, Eric Whitacre and Riks Ešenwalds. In the follow-up will be included several newly commissioned choral arrangements of evergreen popular songs by Billy Joel, John Farnham and Parrish & Toppano, as well as of Afrikaans songs made famous by Laurika Rauch and Jannie du Toit.

RADIO KALAHARI ORKES

A well-known unique and exciting band. A variety of music styles are incorporated in this performance. Audiences have enjoyed this band for decades. Always new, fresh and energetic. This performance revolves around Ghoema music and Africana music with a strong “here and now” messages.

 

MESSENGER: DIE NUWE VERTONING DEUR NATANIËL

12- 15 Dec, 20:15- 22:00

A collection of new stories, in English and Afrikaans, original compositions and timeless music previously sung by artists like Tom Jones, Amy Winehouse and B.B. King with an impressive wardrobe from designer, Floris Louw.

Christmas Carols Sing-along

16 & 17 Dec, 19:00- 21:00

Enthusiasts are urged and invited not to miss this annual joyous ride towards the spirit of Christmas. Many memorable traditional Christmas songs will be performed by the Festival choir, Festival Orchestra and hand- picked soloists. Richard Cock will let the bells ring loudly to sound the beginning of the festive times.

The 2018 edition of Richard Cock and Friends sees Richard joined by outstanding South African tenor Siyabonga Maqungo, in addition to international baritone Colin Schachat and soprano songbird Keren Hadar from the USA. This fantastic team will be joined by the Oude Libertas Festival Orchestra to present a programme of popular favourites across all genres from opera to musical theatre.

Dozi and Friends

Dozi is one of only a handful of unique Caucasian male South African singers, who is fully trilingual, Dozi became the missing link between Black and White South Africans when he was asked to perform traditional Afrikaans songs in Zulu on a popular Afrikaans television program called “Noot vir Noot”.

With their flawless, effortless technique and pulsating rhythms they showcase what can be done on only two guitars, classical guitars and create a very exciting instrumental pop sound whilst mimicking drum sounds and bass guitar all at the same time.

In a 90 minute high energy musical fiesta, CH2 will join forces with singer, Cito, best known for being the frontman for one of South Africa’s longest existing rock bands, WONDERboom.

Zolani Mahola – Rok & Rol

She is best known as the lead singer for Freshly Ground. In the production Rok & Rol she sets out to honour the role and influence of women in the world of rock & roll. Fantastic international icons like Janis Joplin, Nina Simone, Tina Turner, Alanis Morisette local women like Miriam Makeba and Brenda Fassie are being hailed. A team of world-class musicians embraces this inspiring and moving journey to tell the story of how women made their stand in this initially male-dominated industry.

Ike Moriz Swing Band

30 Dec, 18:30- 20:15

Ike has selected well-suited songs from his albums as well as popular classics of the swing and pop genres to create an unforgettable evening under the stars with hits like Dean Martin’s ‘Sway’, John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’, Sinatra’s ‘New York New York’ and Moriz’s ‘Love Swings’ and ’To Cape Town’.

New Year’s Eve Oldies and Party

On this special evening Oude Libertas embraces everyone present with its famous ambience that has made the theatre such a special attraction to visitors around the world.

It`s more than a tradition: it`s a highlight on the annual calendar and an experience not to be missed. Join the Oude Libertas New Year’s Band with super musicians, brilliant voices of singers, Sima Mashazi, Kyle Seconna, Zolani Shangazi, Juju Domingo and MC Jannie Moolman. The talented Melissa Van Der Spuy has chosen a rich repertoire of traditional party music.

Everybody can join on the dance floor in the foyer and dance. Come early, bring your favourite food. The bar will be open all night long!
