The Franschhoek Wine Tram began operating with a short rail journey in a 32-seater open-sided tram visiting just two wine estates. Five years down the line, they operate six different lines, visiting 22 estates and wineries on the Franschhoek wine route. They recently launched an 80-seater double decker railway tram that proudly holds the charm and the craftsmanship of the old world in a 21st century operation.
Designed and manufactured in Johannesburg, the double decker will take you on a full day, hop-on hop-off journey for R220, excluding wine tasting fees at the estates.
The new tram was launched by the Minister of Economic Opportunities, Alan Winde, who highlighted how the collaboration that was created has benefitted the growth in the business, the wine industry and the tourism industry.
Each of the 6 lines, pointed above, offers a mixed route, combining a railway tram and a bus-tram. In some instances, the railway tram will drop you at the entrance to the estate and from there you will be shuttled inside by a bus tram. In other cases, a short walk from the station will get you to the wine tasting venue.
With Franschhoek also known for being the location for some of the best restaurants in South Africa. It is recommended that you plan it into your day on the tram and prepare accordingly. A significant number of these restaurants are located at the wine estates en route. For this reason, it is best to make a booking at your restaurant of choice or order a picnic basket if the option is available, beforehand.
Full details about every estate and the offerings it holds can be found on the Franschhoek Wine Tram website.
Franschhoek Wine Tram now offers an exclusive and direct transfer service from Cape Town and surrounds (including the airport) to Franschhoek.
