Must-see galleries in Hermanus, Western Cape
The tourism sector in Cape Town and the Western Cape reportedly boomed in December of 2016, undoubtedly the boom has impacted cities across the Western Cape allowing destination based areas to slowly become regenreated cultivated hubs for increased activity across the Arts sector.
HelloArt recently paid a visit to galleries based within the seaside town of Hermanus, south east of Cape Town- a town which is commonly visted for it’s whale watching during Spring and it’s lush country-side appeal year round. Hermanus has undoubtedly been affected by the rise in Tourism and plays host to varied new creative based companies.
Below is a list of galleries we thoroughly enjoyed visiting:
Nestled in a courtyard off Main Road one can find ‘Kunskantoor’, an intimate viewing room of quaint and lively contemporary artworks curated by Renzske Scholtz.
The small gallery rotates it’s artwork on display regularly. Visitors can find new works by an impressive lineup of local leading South African Contemporaries both new and established such as Karlien de Villiers; David Kuijers; Heike Davies; Anton Karstel; Catherine Paynter; Alastair Barnes and the incredible Keiskamma Art Project. New extensions and beautiful developments are expected for the small gallery, so keep your eyes peeled for early Spring season -it is a definite must see within the Hermanus area.

ROSSOUW MODERN & ROSSOUW SPACE:
In 1995 Jozua Rossouw opened the Fisherman’s Gallery, rebranded as Rossouw Modern Hermanus, Rossouw Modern galleries has stood the test of time and is enjoyed by many art lovers and new collectors. The quaint historic fisherman’s cottage, which offers a relaxed atmosphere in which to appreciate fine artwork and special attention to client and artist alike has made this a destination gallery not to be missed. More recently Rossouw Modern has extended it’s curated area to ROSSOUW SPACE found just off Main Road. Artists you can regularly find curated within the Rossouw Modern galleries include Christiaan Diedericks; Bastiaan Van Steenis; Obert Jonhwe; Willie Bester; Frans Mulder and Jono Dry.

WALKER BAY ART GALLERY :
Since Walker Bay Gallery’s inception in 2007, the gallery has grown into a greatly respected establishment within the Hermanus area. Walker Bay offers an exciting up to date contemporary art selection as well as a fantastic Investment selection for the more discerned art collector. Walker Bay Gallery is located in the main road in a beautifully historic, traditional Overberg-style building and hosts a restaurant nestled in a sunny courtyard inviting visitors to team up luncheon with friendly assistance from it’s intimate curation team. Stay on the lookout for new developments and announcements with taking place during the Winter season.
Artists you can view within the gallery include Beezy Baily; Gregorie Boonzaier; Norman Catharine; Tay Dall; Jimmy Law and MJ Lourens.

FORTY X 40 GALLERY:
The incredibly small exhibition space plays host to a beautiful selection of paintings paired alongside ceramics. The gallery is owned and curated by Ed Bredenkamp, whom also owns Lembu Gallery; showcasing local art and craft. The gallery is not one to be missed and regularly participates and curates it’s selections for the monthly Art Walk.

THE ART GALLERY:
The Art Gallery is a fantastic Artist’s initiative owned by a handful of Local Contemporaries known to the Hermanus area such as Lize Van Der Walt, Erna Dry; Jeandre Marinier; and Christine Henderson. The Art Gallery circulates it’s curation monthly- showcasing a diverse range of artworks from Abstract to Ceramics and Realism. The gallery also assists with international shipping of artworks for International clientele and participates in the monthly local Art Walk.
