A Non-accidental Pairing

A Non-accidental Pairing

Charango Peruvian Grill & Bar has introduced the ‘Wine Society’ series. These events are held on the last Tuesday of every month, where Charango partners with different wine estates and hosts a unique food and wine pairing dinner. This month, Charango Grill and Bar hosted Iona Wines from the Elgin region to take part in their new exclusive series.

The challenge, arising from such an event is for the Executive chef of Charango, Kieran Whyte, together with each winemaker, to provide a full, indulgent experience of 6 different alcoholic drinks and 5 courses. Guests will taste the wines and enjoy the perfectly paired Peruvian inspired dishes, creating a unique five course dining experience.

Beverages served ranged from a delicious welcoming cocktail, to a crisp Grappa to end the night. In between we were served with a 2016 Sauvignon Blanc, the One Man Band White 2015, a 2015 Pinot Noir & the One Man Band Red 2011. All wines served were carefully double checked by Iona’s own Jacqui Henderson.

Head Chef Kieran Whyte, known for his meticulous approach, took a careful attention and re-evented his dishes and cooking to complement the wines served on the evening. He is doing so for every monthly pairing in a way that brings together his Peruvian cuisine to adjust with each wine estate the restaurant hosts.

Our menu for the evening included Atún Nikkei (Seared Tuna Takai 2.0), New Style Ceviche, Pato Y Remolacha of sugar & beer smoked duck, Vientre De Credo consisting roast Pork belly, truffled Cancha, torcin and blackened tenderstem. The ‘After Dinner Coffee’ was made with Coffee panna cotta, coffee crumble & chocolate cake. The unique flavours blossomed with each portion and truly came to fruition when paired with the selected wines.

Every last Wednesday of the month sees another well picked wine estate from the Western Cape that brings the best of their latest wines to create a one of a kind, inner urban experience that will leave you spellbound. The winemaker and chef will be present at the event to talk you through the flavour combinations and to answer any questions you may have about the food or wine being served. A true cape winelands tasting experience, right in the heart of Cape Town.
